Sky Mirror by Anish Kapoor: Rockefeller Center
As an apprentice machinist at Performance Structures Inc (located in Oakland, CA) , I assisted in fabricating and finishing a monumental sculpture (measuring 35-feet-diameter and weighing over 30 tons) consisting of a concave/convex dish made entirely of stainless steel and polished to a mirror finish. This optical object changes throughout the day (and night) and is an example of what Kapoor describes as a “non-object,” a sculpture that, despite its monumentality, suggests a window or void and often seems to vanish into its surroundings. Sky Mirror is a portable sculpture which premiered at the Rockefeller Center (NYC) and was recently purchased in England.
